Thank you for taking the time to learn about the BrightStart Initiative.

My name is Michael Kang, and together with my brother Marcus, we are the student founders behind the BrightStart Initiative. The seeds for this initiative began during my freshman year, when I was exploring a potential career in healthcare and completed an internship at a local dental practice.

During that experience, I had the opportunity to speak with doctors and team members about their work. Through those conversations, I became aware of significant disparities, not only in access to professional dental care, but also in access to oral health education and the basic supplies needed to maintain healthy habits at home.

While my interests have since shifted toward business, Marcus and I both felt strongly that we could help address this gap in a meaningful way. We began reaching out to members of our community to explore what might be possible. Through my involvement in DECA, I was able to connect with leaders in both the dental field and public education. As the ASB student body president I felt I had a platform to try and mobilize students as the 3rd critical leg of our foundation. By bringing these networks together, Marcus and I realized this was something we could build even as students at Newport High School.

What followed was incredibly encouraging.

Dental professionals, educators, and community leaders were generous with their time, guidance, and support. Through their willingness to connect us with others and contribute to the mission, BrightStart quickly grew from an idea into a truly community-driven initiative. Our fellow students have also played an important role, contributing their language skills to help us expand our reach through educational videos in multiple languages.

We are deeply grateful to the teachers, administrators, dentists, and industry partners who have helped us secure the resources needed. Today, we are prepared to support over 5,000 students in our community.

As we continue to grow, we are actively recruiting BrightStart Champions in schools throughout our region, student leaders who want to help expand access to oral health education and resources.

The Bright Start Initiative is on a mission to ensure every child in King County has access to essential oral hygiene supplies and education. By bridging the gap between underserved families and passionate community leaders, we provide students with toothbrushes, hygiene kits, and, most importantly, the knowledge to maintain their oral health with confidence. Through our BrightStart Champions—a network of dedicated students —we empower children and their families with the tools and support they need to foster lifelong healthy habits. Together, we can create a ripple effect of healthy smiles and brighter futures across our communities!
